Mentoring Philosophy

Throughout my training, I have had mentors that were not only creative and careful scientists, but were also caring and supportive. This created a sense of connection I had with my mentors that has had far-reaching effects on my career. I am taking the lessons learned from these relationships, combined with my experiences as a first-gen student, and applying them to create an inclusive and supportive lab environment. I have a Lab Compact that clearly describes expectations for mentors and mentees. I hold regular one-on-one meetings with my trainees. I employ equity-minded mentorship, recognizing that everyone has unique strengths, experiences, and potential that can be nurtured. I have my trainees complete yearly individual development plans, followed by one-on-one discussion over coffee. I am actively involved in their careers, seeking out training opportunities, speaking engagements, and conferences that will serve each individual mentee.
